ActionAid calls for immediate ceasefire and full respect for international law in latest escalation in conflict in the Arab Region
ActionAid expresses grave concern over the recent military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against targets across Iran, as well as Iran’s subsequent military retaliation. This dangerous escalation has sharply intensified regional instability at a time of already heightened global tension. As a global federation committed to human rights, peace, and justice, ActionAid calls on all parties to immediately halt hostilities. Continued military action endangers millions, exacerbates humanitarian suffering, and further erodes the foundations of international peace and security.
All states are legally bound under international law, including international humanitarian law and the UN Charter, to protect civilians. ActionAid recognises the longstanding suffering of both Palestinian and Iranian people under decades of repression and restrictions on fundamental freedoms. ActionAid emphasises that regional peace is inseparable from global peace. In an already volatile international system, renewed conflict in the Arab Region will have far‑reaching economic, political, and social consequences across the world.
This escalation is occurring as global food insecurity reaches alarming levels, with conflict driving the majority of hunger crises worldwide. Disruptions to supply chains, fuel provision, and trade routes are likely to push food and fuel prices even higher, which means that the burdens of this conflict will again fall heaviest on ordinary people, especially low-income families already struggling with rising living costs.
Sustainable peace can only be secured through diplomacy, dialogue, and respect for human rights - not through military campaigns. ActionAid stands in unwavering solidarity with all civilians affected by this crisis. We call for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful, just, and durable resolution in full compliance with international law.
